Porsche Museum – celebrating 75 years of Sport cars.

In case you where not aware, this year we are celebrating the 75th anniversary of a very famous sports car company (if we can still call them that). Yes, Porsche is celebrating its history and legacy in a big way this year. This year’s main focus at the Goodwood Festival of Speed was all about Porsche and their legacy. There has also been various other celebrations, reveals, racecar liveries and special edition Hotwheels and Matchbox toys to commemorate this milestone. I took the opportunity during a recent German holiday with my family to join in on the celebrations by visiting the museum in Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart… the home of Porsche.

The modern museum itself has opened its door in 2009, and is housed in an ultra modern, almost floating monolith design building . From the moment you arrive at the traffic circle at the heart of Zuffenhausen, which is characterised by huge floating structure with three iconic 911 models attached to the top, and you catch a glimpse of the building, you know you are in for something special. From the immaculate parking garage, to the foyer with a glass wall, with a view into the museum workshop, everything is set up to the highest of standards, letting you know that this is Porsche. They are proud of their history and legacy and they want anyone who visits, to be well aware of that.

The collection and its contents change almost on a weekly basis

The museum collection is arranged in a chronological order with the entire collection spiraling upwards from the past towards the future. Along the way, around 80 to 100 cars throughout Porsches road car and racecar history are spread all over this very visual timeline. The collection and its contents change almost on a weekly basis, but the chronological nature of the collection always remains. The most amazing and interesting part is that the entire collection is without barriers. Yes, you can get as close as you want to some of the most iconic Porsches in history, and some displays are even there for you to sit in and enjoy. All along the museum there are history, information and interactive displays taking you through and educating you about the brand and its legacy.

The cars on display are epic. The 917/20 in “Pink Pig” livery, the 959 Dakar, an immaculate original 2.7 RS and the first Boxster concept car, to name but a view, are all on display. Nowhere in the world will you realistically get the chance to get up close and personal with some many iconic cars from Porsche’s 75 year history. Even if you’re not a Porsche fan, or even a Petrol head for that matter, there is no denying how magnificent a place like the Porsche Museum is. If you ever find yourself even close to the city of Stuttgart, do yourself a favor and visit the Porsche Museum as it is truly an experience of a lifetime.
